DUI

If you have been arrested for driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, you can face harsh criminal charges, strictly prosecuted by the Ontario courts. Upon arrest you face an immediate 90 day licence suspension, a 7 day vehicle impoundment, and a $550 fine plus reinstatement charges.

If you are convicted of impaired driving, you can face penalties anywhere between the minimum $1000 fine and the maximum of up to 10 years in jail. If this is your second or third offence you will receive an additional minimum jail sentence of 30-120 days.

DUI Facts:

  • Ontario has a zero tolerance for anyone under 21 years old, driving with a G1, G2, M1 or M2 licence or any commercial driver operating a vehicle requiring an A-F licence.
  • Refusing to submit to an alcohol or drug test carries the same penalties as a DUI charge including suspension, financial cost and a criminal record.
  • Warn Range is when your blood alcohol level is between 0.05 and 0.079. First time offences can result in an immediate 3 day vehicle suspension and a financial penalty.

All DUI convictions are criminal convictions which have lasting repercussions even after you have paid your fines and/or served your sentence. A DUI conviction will drastically increase your vehicle insurance and a criminal record will limit your ability to travel outside of Canada. Criminal convictions can show up on employment criminal background checks, effectively limiting your ability to secure employment.
